It wasn’t that busy at work today. I started the day on the computer setting up a PDF of a poster for a client. After I printed the posters, I laminated them. There wasn’t a lot of work I could do today and all the computers were being used, so I spent the majority of the day doing odd jobs around the workplace. I cleaned up and organized all of the paper. You wouldn’t believe how many different kinds of paper exist. After the paper was organized, I scored and folded “Summer Street Sir Speedy” pamphlets that the president then took to a show to promote the business.

We set up a lot of things for promoting Sir Speedy today. I finished printing all of the business cards for my coworker today, along with two other coworkers business. The notepads I set up yesterday were trimmed and mounted onto the clipboard. I put together mailings to promote Sir Speedy. Each mailing included one Sir Speedy notepad, a coupon and a business card. Then each mailing was shrink-wrapped and prepared for shipping. This took most of the day. There were a couple odd jobs I worked on for clients, but nothing that took too long. I stayed late because these mailings had to be done today so they could be shipped tomorrow.

My day at work went by really fast. It was a very busy day at SirSpeedy and there wasn’t one second of waiting around for work. I walked in this morning and was handed a mess of work orders. One order was for a business card I have been working on. I received an email today from the client with the last changes and it is ready to be printed. Another order was for a business card of one of my coworkers. Nothing had to be changed on the card but she ran out, so I did some searching on the computer to find the old file. I imposed it so it was 8 up on a single sheet of paper and set it up to print duplex, found the right stock of paper and started printing. There were a few small printing orders I set up on the computer and printed and the rest of the day was spent putting together “SirSpeedy Notepads”. All of the pages were already printed; I just had to arrange them. Twenty-Five sheets of plain notepad paper, One pink slip, which had to be fifth from the back and a piece of chip board on the back. It was a very tedious job.

When I walked in this morning my supervisor handed me a mess of work orders and sat me at the computer. There were a few business card work orders and an invitation to set up. I received an email from a client with comments regarding the business card I set up earlier in the week. A few changes were made and I sent out another proof. The invitation I set up was pretty straightforward, except I had to make sure that when it printed it would be double-sided perfectly. After they were all printed, I trimmed them, laminated them, and trimmed it again.
When I went to my supervisor to ask what should be done, she replied with, “boy do I have a job for you”. Some booklets were being set out to a client. I filled out all the FedEx shipping forms. There were 55 of them, and each had to be addressed to someone else. It took a lot longer then you think. I could barely move my hand when I was finished and I have the “sender’s” information memorized. After all of the shipping forms were filled out, we packaged the booklets. Once they were all ready to be shipped out, my day was done.
September 17
A client of SirSpeedy placed an order for booklets. The client provides us with a PDF of their booklet, we fix it up if needed and print it. After they are all printed each page needs to be hole punched and the booklet needs to be spirally bound. I was on binding duty for the majority of the day. I don’t even know exactly how many booklets there are because it seems like it will never end. There are still many more booklets that need to be bound. I’m sure that’s what I’ll be doing tomorrow.
September 16
I was there at 7:30 this morning. My supervisor wasn’t. And since I don’t have a key I waited outside till 8:00. Once I got in I set up a few new computers around the office, then went right back to the laminating. After all nametags were laminated I stuck clips on the back of them all, then boxed them all up. The rest of the day was spent putting mailings together. 1250 of them. 900 one way, 300 another way, and 50 another. We had to be very careful on the counting. Course it turns out we didn’t have enough documents for all of the mailings, so more had to be printed. After all the envelopes were filled, they went through two machines. One machine prints the address on the envelope, and the other stamps and seals it. When they were all ready to be shipped a coworker and I walked them down to the post office.
September 15
Today I finished casing CDs that I had burned last week. Then I set up business cards for a client on the computer and sent them a couple proofs. The rest of the day was dedicated to blank nametags. After setting blank nametags up on the computer, printing and trimming them, I was set up on a laminating machine to laminate all of them. There were about 150 tags. The machine can only go so fast and I can only go as fast as the machine so it took a while. I didn’t even finish today so I was asked to come in early tomorrow. The job needs to be done by 10:00.
September 11
Today I was on CD duty again. A client provided me with 10 master CDs, and wanted 40 copies of each. Also, the label for the CD had to be changed. I made the changes to the labels, and burned all of the CDs. The last CD burning and labeling job I did called for me to physically stick the label onto the CD. Today I used a machine that actually prints the label onto the CD. I babysat this machine while it was printing, but thankfully they also had an order for business cards. So while I was adding CDs to this machine and changing the label for print when it called for it, I also worked on the computer to layout proofs for a business card. As boring as all of this sounds though it’s pretty cool because I am in charge of these jobs. I had the whole room to myself and did all the work. I didn’t have anyone leaning over my shoulder telling me what to do. They trust that I will get the job done right and in good time, which is a really good feeling.
September 10
United Way is a big client of SirSpeedy. We print all of their posters, directories, mailings, and other odd jobs for them. Today was spent putting kits for United Way together. We printed directories, punched and bound them, printed four different posters, envelopes, and personal mailings. 210 kits had to made up. Each box called for a different amount of each document. I had spreadsheets, which stated the specific amount of the individual prints for the specific box number. So basically I spent the entire day counting pieces of paper and putting them into boxes, then labeled the box. I didn’t have to use much brainpower but it kept me busy!
September 9
Today I went right back to the CD burning. After all 840 CDs were burned, I printed the labels, and then labeled each CD. After they were all labeled I put each CD into a CD case. These CDs are lessons to learning Hebrew. So all the CDs were labeled in Hebrew, which is a language I cannot read. Since Hebrew is read backwards, the CDs all had to be placed in the CD cases backwards. I am of course used to opening a CD case one way, which is the way that most of us open a CD case. We don’t even think about it, we just open it. I had to think about it today, because all of these cases had to be set up opposite from what I am used to.
September 8
Today was a very boring day. The job that I worked on consisted of burning CDs, labeling CDs and putting them all into cases. Sounds fun right! In total there were 840 CDs that needed to be burned I was at it literally all day. There are two towers dedicated to CD burning. Each tower has eleven disk drives. One for the master CD and the other ten for blanks. I spent the entire day standing in front of these towers, placing the master CD in the tray, pressing a button, waiting for it to burn to the hard drive, taking that disk out, placing ten blank CDs in the other trays, pressing a button, waiting for those to burn, and repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat…all day! I didn’t even finish all of the burning that needed to be done so I will be at that tomorrow as well.
September 3
Now that I have seen what a typical day is like at SirSpeedy, work orders are given to me and I am on my own. I don’t feel like an intern, and they don’t really treat me like one. Today I was given an order for business cards. The client provides me with all of the text and basic guidelines. I created four different layouts and sent them the proofs. They also asked for their logo to be changed. Again, they gave me the guidelines for the changes and I was on my way. I sent them proofs to their logo as well and now I just have to wait for them to get back to me with comments.
September 2
My first day interning at SirSpeedy I spent half of the day shadowing my supervisor. He does the computer designing and deals with the all of the printing. He gave me a tour of the building and explained all that they do at SirSpeedy.
They are very busy this time of year and after a couple hours of shadowing, they put me right on the computer and started handing me work orders. My first job was to set up an invitation to a new sports bar in Boston. The client provided basic instructions and what they are looking for. They provided the body copy and pictures for this invitation. I created 5 proofs for this job. Each design had a very different collage of pictures. I had the most fun with the body copy. They asked for it to be creative, and appealing, which allowed me to step out of the box. Expressing the type with color and a strong hierarchy made this invitation worth reading.
